Pure verismo! And Puccini's sentimental one act opera SUOR ANGELICA. A noblewoman, bearing a child out of wedlock, is forced to join a convent. Learning her child has died, she takes poison. Too late she realizes her sin, and begs the Madonna for forgiveness.
